THE RED QUEEN (2019)
Two species that co-evolve will oscillate in a power struggle, continually pushing each other to adapt in response to a shift in the status quo. With time, it can appear that nothing has changed, they remain equal, yet huge amounts of 'resources' have been used to evolve new characteristics as neither one is able to remain stagnant in fear of extinction.
This evolutionary 'arms-race' is seen outside of the natural realm also. Evolution through natural and sexual selection has given rise to an incredible array of variation in life. Pushing all life to the extremes, including humans. How could we escape it? How can we learn from it? We've effectively 'stepped out of' the food chain, can we equally eject ourselves out of the race? Or are we fated to fall victim to this tenacious phenomena?
LETTER TO MY NEWBORN CHILD (2017)
A young father, inspired by the birth of his new-born daughter, reflects upon the enormous task of raising a new life in the world. From the initial shock of the new arrival, to the primal emotions that arise, this solo looks at how nurturing a new human is just as much about looking inwards at the beliefs we hold, as it is about caring for a small person.
How can a white male plan for the future of his mixed race daughter, when she will undoubtedly encounter problems and situations that he has never experienced. How best should he prepare her for love, for prejudice, for violence?
Looking inwards for the answers becomes a strange dichotomy between therapy and antagonization.
